Direct Access

Did You Know That In Utah You Can See A Doctor Without A Referral?

Physical therapy in Utah is recognized as a “direct access” health service. What this means is that a physicians’ prescription or referral is not required by Utah state law. If you do get a referral, Utah is direct access, so that referral can be used to go anywhere you want because it is not necessary for your access to care. You now have control of your care!

What does this mean for you?

You have access to physical therapy for evaluation and treatment with no need for a prescription or referral! Yes! This in turn, helps you the patient, to save money and time that it would take to see your physician first.

Do not get us wrong. We truly enjoy and appreciate our relationships with our health care providers and recognize their important role in your health care. We believe that regular communication with your primary care physician is important and we will keep in contact with them through regular updates regarding your current condition.

Please remember that physical therapists are educated with a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate degree and receive extensive education and clinical training in the evaluation and treatment of patients with functional limitations and disabilities. It is important to note that physical therapists also recognize when a patient presents with signs and symptoms outside of the scope of their expertise and will refer the patient to a physician or specialist if needed.
